The standout features of this knife are more than just a cool look. These make it one of the most reliable and useful folding knives on the market.

If you're not already one of them, you definitely know who it is. This is one of the most popular knives in the US military

There I was alone and unafraid. From my perch on top of the toilet in Miramar, my Marine Corps prepared to fend off the nearby roosters that inhabited the building. Armed with only my RAT boots and a dynamic collapsible KA-BAR, I triumphed over another desperate call against incredible odds. I kissed the saffron and cleaned the blade and left the battlefield.

Regardless of your service branch or MOS, it's a good idea to have a folding knife become your most used piece of equipment. Whether at work or enjoying a long vacation in the backyard, everyone needs a reliable, quality blade. Maybe you're looking for your first knife, or you have a healthy collection. You can never have too many - and the knives on this list are so good that I wouldn't blame you for choosing each one.

Benchmade's Mini Presidio II is the golden bowl of the folding knife world. Don't be fooled by the name. The 3.2-inch blade isn't enough for everyday tasks. Just over three ounces is enough to take all day, every day. The weight savings are a result of the knife's composite handle replacing the metal handle of previous generations. As long as you accept that more weight doesn't equal higher quality, that's a good thing.

The blade's metal construction is impressive, but if you're sharpening yourself, the factory edge leaves room for improvement. One thing worth noting is the excellent axle lock. Once the blade is locked, it can be sharpened. It's good to know that you put this knife through its paces.

Mission & Purpose contributor Matt Sampson uses his Mini Presidio II to cut everything from fishing line to camo netting, and he starts camp with a fire in the taillight. He's had a few repairs in three years of ownership (heads up: don't expect too much from a pocket clip), but the knife has held up well enough to be his EDC choice. Add one to your collection and you'll see why.

If you've spent more than a heartbeat in a military environment, I'd be surprised if you haven't laid eyes on some CRKT M16. This folding knife is more affordable, versatile and rugged than it weighs at 2.7 ounces.

The small three-inch blade is slimmer than older variations designed for combat use, but still includes the famous tanto point and serrated section. What stands out about this knife is the large finger tab. They aid in the opening motion of the blade and provide a functional strike when locked in the open position.

At this size, your best bet is to keep this knife in a sheath for everyday work. Too small for heavy field or combat, but there's nothing wrong with having tools for different jobs. Our own Dennis White used this to steal tree branches and get his car out of semi-frozen soil, so you might be surprised how capable this little knife can be in a pinch.

We haven't had a chance to write an in-depth review of the Gerber 06 FAST yet, but how can we write a folding knife guide without it? This knife comes from a very good breed, and it's easy to see that Gerber intended to develop this item in a harmless way. One-handed quick unlock? Check it out. Strategic, understated colors? Obviously. Are you building a quality career in the military? Undoubtedly.

An Army Ranger's Preferred Folding Knife

With a 3.75 inch blade, this knife offers many of the benefits of having a fixed blade knife while being portable and EDC friendly. The spring-assisted opening mechanism is a beauty, although it's not as crisp as some of the older, military knives we know and love. The well-designed handle is super grippy and fits comfortably in bare or gloved hands without being too big to carry in a pocket—though at 5.7 ounces, in some cases you might want something smaller and lighter.

Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is further proof that a good military knife is nothing like something out of an 80s action movie. Sure, a long blade has its value and a number of tactical features, but a knife's primary function is to cut things, right? If quality razors are what you're after, this might be just what the doctor ordered.

The result of excellent ergonomics is a compact size that fits all sizes. An exaggerated thumb hole facilitates a satisfying opening every time. The blade itself is sharp out of the box and easy to keep sharp in the steel housing used by Spyderco. Some of you may be stymied by the size or lack of servers, but there are other knives for this type of job. This rock solid ADC is comfortable in the office or back woods.

After more than 18 months of hard work, Mission and Purpose contributor Joe Plessler got his money's worth out of this (not cheap) knife. He lived on the Appalachian Trail and was easily cut by a hard climbing rope. When it comes down to it, the Para Fuji 2 is pretty well put together. Strap on your plate carrier. Drop it in your inbox. Tuck it in your shorts pocket. This knife can do so many things.

My opinion of Moll and the KA-BAR brand is generally well known, so I'll cut to the chase: I dig it. Using this overbuilt kit reminds me of driving a diesel Toyota Hilux around a campfire in Lagerneck (think Tacoma, but a little stiffer): both feel physically impossible to leave.

Compared to options from companies like Benchmade, Gerber, and Spyderco, this knife is noticeably lacking in fit and finish. It's not super-smooth or precise, and the beefy locking mechanism requires care to unlock the blade with one hand. The rough handle and thick blade are notable departures from the knives on this list. As a trade-in, you'll get a useful piece of equipment that won't mind splitting wood, shoveling frozen soil, or spending days in the dust on your plate carrier.

I have been a believer in KA-BAR Mules for over a decade. This is my ADC for garrisons, deployments, many camping trips, and in my garage. It's not the fastest or prettiest, but I'm sure it'll be ready when I need it. While all of this may not make it your only knife or a candidate for your favorite knife, it deserves a place in your collection.

Another device I love is my small handheld Kershaw line - weird name, cool little knife. Instead of joining the crowd with aggressive handles, rounded blades, and mixed black paint that looks like it belongs on a SWAT team, the line is sleek, smooth, and almost elegant. I find it interesting.

Lek's clamping point makes it suitable for cutting. It's more of a scalpel than a knife (more on that later). The blade is quick to adjust with one hand and locks in place with a secure safety mechanism. J.
